The Frenchwoman, who has already accumulated more than 2,000 kilometres of competition in 2024, will seek her fifth victory in five participations
The 360º The Challenge Gran Canaria will once again feature a star of the calibre of Claire Bannwarth, a four-time finisher of the race, who has also won it on four consecutive occasions. In 2023, where only 25 runners completed it successfully, she crossed the finish line after 58 hours, 29 minutes and 40 seconds, a time that allowed her to win the women’s event and finish second in the general classification, behind only the Romanian Claudiu Beletoiu.
The 35-year-old French runner is usually one of those who accumulates the most kilometres in her legs. Last year she ran 28 ultra-races, and has just participated in two events of 160 and 165 kilometres seven days apart, the Quebec Mega Trail of the international circuit of the Gran Canaria World Trail Majors and the Hardrock 100 Endurance Run in Colorado; and last week she was proclaimed the winner of the Crossing Switzerland, covering 390 kilometres of the Alpine country in 93 hours and 47 minutes. In this month of July alone, she has accumulated 710 kilometres of competition.
Claire Bannwarth has achieved excellent results in 2024, where she has won more than half of the races she has participated in (five of nine), and began the year with three consecutive victories in her first three participations, the Montane Winter Spine Races; TrailCat200 and Lake Zuri 100.
On July 5 in Quebec, she finished the 160 kilometres with 6,500 metres of positive gradient in sixth position with 32 hours, 24 minutes and 20 seconds. Seven days later, in the San Juan Colorado she covered the distance of 165 kilometres with more than 10,000 metres of positive gradient in eighth place in 36 hours, 13 minutes and 45 seconds. Two feats of this level with seven days difference are only reachable for the best runners on the planet. Her good result in the Quebec Mega Trail earned her second position in the general classification of the Gran Canaria World Trail Majors with 2,530 points. To complete a legendary month of July, the French runner crossed the Swiss country from one side to the other in less than four days, stopping the clock at 93 hours and 47 minutes, winning her fifth ultra of the year 2024.
